We all know that emotional health is as important as
physical health—and this is as true for our children as it is for us. Studies
have shown that roughly 20 percent of children and adolescents at any given
time are suffering from a mental health problem, and that these problems
can seriously impair their ability to function at home and at school. Teenagers
are particularly vulnerable because this is a time in their lives when traumatic
changes are happening in their bodies. They can become violent, depressed,
addicted, or suicidal. With all of this going on, they need their parents
more than ever.
Parents of teenagers should be alert and watchful. Learn about the health
care services available in your community. And remember: If your child is
suffering from a mental or emotional disorder, this is not a reflection of
your parenting skills. But it is a sign that you should offer renewed help
and support.
